Not surprisingly Northumberland is famed for its quality fishing, with a stunning coastline and miles of unspoilt countryside it truly is a haven for those wanting to get away from it all. The Bluebell Hotel has the benefit of the River Tweed on its doorstep, world renowned for its first class salmon fishing.

The River Tweed is Scotland's second largest river (after the Tay) and runs for 156 kilometres through the Scottish borders and south through Northumberland. Brimming with salmon and trout, it has been fished by anglers since the 17th century. Along with the Tweed, the Rivers Tyne and Coquet are also regarded as first class for coarse and game fishing.

Northumberland boasts some of the country's best game, coarse and sea fishing with something for everyone. Kielder Water and Forest Park is the perfect setting for fly fishing with plentiful supplies of trout in the most tranquil and picturesque surroundings imaginable.

The reservoirs and lakes scattered throughout the county provide a mix of boat and bank fishing, one of the best being Derwent Water which provides some of the most remarkable still water fishing to be found.

The River Tyne is a centre for devotees of coarse fishing with plentiful supplies of perch, pike, eel and grayling, and also has a supply of salmon with the largest average weights.

The River Aln and the River Rede, on the other hand, which stretch through the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland National Park, are good spots for brown trout fishing.

Although permits to fish sea trout and salmon are expensive on the Till and the Tweed due to their influential and long histories in the field, the Coquet and Aln are still reasonably inexpensive and excellent value for money.
